A Many-Hued Foundation
When Cobble Hill Playschool moved into its current quarters at 93 Rapelye Street, it was a so-called "vanilla box" - a very minimal, mostly white space of sheet rock and plumbing. "We thought we would see how we could work this space before we made any big decisions," says director Carol Troha.
But four years ago, it was becoming clear that the vanilla box wasn't quite working. The snack room was too small, for one thing, and Carol's office was in the reception area, not near the kids and teaching. But the prospect of remaking the space on the preschool budget was daunting.
In stepped Vrinda Khanna and her husband Robert Schultz, a pair of architects whose two children had attended CHP. Khanna not only designed the space as it currently exists gratis, but also found the contractors and carpenters to do the job on a preschool budget. The centerpiece of Khanna's design was a colorful brick wall at the entrance - a welcoming presence that honors the foundation that parents' contributions provide to the school. For a donation of $250, any family can have their name laser-engraved on one of the bricks.
